How to Write a Letter to the Editor

Your thoughts and comments are welcome at The Bryan Times.

Public Forum Policy

(11-24-04)
-The Bryan Times reserves the right to accept or reject letters for the Public Forum at its discretion. Letters submitted will be considered for publication, but this does not necessarily mean they will be used.
-Letters must be signed by the person taking responsibility for the letter. Letters submitted by Email will need to be confirmed. All letters must include the name, address and telephone number of the person taking responsibility: however; only the name and town of the writer will be published. If a letter does not include these three items, it will not be considered for use. Letters need to be easily confirmed or they will not be used.
-Letters with multiple signatures exceeding the word limit will bear the signature of the person taking responsibility for the letter and a count of the signatures. The letter will be kept on file for anyone wishing to see the other signatures.
-Letters are limited to 400 words, with the exception of letters of appreciation, which will be limited to 100 words. This includes concerts, plays, community events, etc. Letters exceeding the word limit will be returned to the writer for the option of editing. Thank you letters will be accepted for the Thank You notices in the classifieds at the expense of the writer.
-Letters will be limited to one per person per month. However, the right of rebuttal will always be considered.
-Letters will be kept to the subjects of issues or commentary.
-Criticism of public officials or their jobs will be limited to the public part of their lives. In no case will the criticism include personal remarks.
-Sources for statements presented as facts may be requested before a letter will be published. -Personal attacks on private citizens or previous writers will not be used. However, debating issues between letter writers is acceptable.
-Letters regarding criminal or civil lawsuits will not be used as it is the philosophy of Bryan Times management that people should fight their court cases in court and not in the Bryan Times. Letters regarding court issues such as capital punishment or profiling will be used.
-Letters regarding disputes between businesses and customers are between the business and its customer and will not be argued in the Bryan Times.
-Letters concerning contracts between a union and business management will not be used because these issues should be resolved in contract negotiations.
-Letters encouraging the formation or disbanding of a union may be used.
-The hiring or firing of a public employee is between a board and an employee and letters regarding this will not be used. This is because most boards (employers) are required by law to keep their end of the dispute confidential while the employee is not. Also, while the Bryan Times would be comfortable running a letter praising a public employee, it would be most uncomfortable running letters critical of a particular employee.
-Letters considered by the Bryan Times staff in poor taste or grossly misleading will not be used.
-The Tuesday one week prior to the Tuesday vote is the deadline for submitting letters concerning an election. This allows for the opportunity for response if necessary.
