Alice Aschliman
(1917 - 2008)

ARCHBOLD - Alice Aschliman, 91, of Archbold, died Saturday evening, May 10, 2008, at Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home, Archbold.
Born Feb. 25, 1917, near Archbold, to Emma (Witmer) and Enos Stuckey, she married Vernon Aschliman on Dec. 30, 1939, and he survives.
A homemaker, she had lived on a farm in Franklin Township for 39 years before moving to Archbold in 1992. She was a charter member of the Tedrow Mennonite Church.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are three sons, Reuben (and wife, Beverly) Aschliman of Fort Collins, Colo., Stephen (Jan) Aschliman of Nashville, Tenn. and Calvin Aschliman of Chicago, Ill.; three daughters, Mary Ann (and husband, Gary) Eastty of Ridgefield, Wash., Marlene (Dave) Bell of Columbia City, Ind. and Joyce Aschliman of Archbold; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Florence Stuckey of Fort Wayne, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Carolyn Aschliman; a grandson; and two sisters, Doris Engle and Velma Richer. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-8 p.m. in the Fairlawn Chapel.
Memorial services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Tedrow Mennonite Church with Pastor Randy Nafziger to officiate. Interment will precede at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Pettisville Cemetery.
Short Funeral Home in Archbold is in charge of the arrangements.

Carol Ann Zellner
(1945 - 2008)

PAULDING - Carol Ann Zellner, 62, died Friday, May 9, 2008, at the Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center, Defiance.
Born Oct. 8, 1945, at Bryan, to Pauline (Snyder) and Hubert Kelly, she married Arthur B. Zellner on June 24, 1994, and he survives. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Paulding, and a former member of the Bryan Eagles.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two children, Tonya Beck of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Todd Beck of Seattle, Wash.; five stepchildren, Jeff Zellner and Tammy Cully, both of Sherwood, Sabrina (and husband, Dustin) Favorite of Montpelier, Todd (and wife, Debbie) Zellner of Mansfield and Mark (Pam) Zellner of Ohio; a sister, Connie Kelly of Sheffield Lake; two brothers, Larry (Mary) Kelly of Englewood and Mark (Jane) Kelly of Bryan; and 10 stepgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be Monday from 4-8 p.m. in the Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, and Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, Paulding.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the church with the Rev. David Meriwether to officiate. Burial will be in Shiffler Cemetery, Jefferson Township, Williams County.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Janet R. 'Rosey' Mattingly
(1932 - 2008)

Janet R. "Rosey" Mattingly, 75, of Bryan, died Saturday morning, May 10, 2008, at the Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers-Bryan.
Born Aug. 22, 1932, at Chicago Heights, Ill., to Lillian (Zazzetti) and Frank Kozuch, she married Robert "Bob" Mattingly and he preceded her in death. She later married Jerry Rupp and he now resides in Akron.
She had been employed at Ohio Art for more than 40 years prior to her retirement. She was also the former owner of two Bryan businesses, the Mattingly Marathon gas station and Mattingly Meadows Horse Riding Stables.
She had volunteered at the Church Women United Thrift Shop in Bryan and was a member of the Bryan Eagles Aerie No. 2233. She is survived by her sisters, Mary Towne and Joanne Funk, both of Bryan, as well as several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Bob Mattingly; and brother, Frank Kozuch Jr.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 3-5 p.m. in the Oberlin-Ford Funeral Home, Bryan.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Father Charles Ritter to officiate. Burial will be in Fountain Grove Cemetery, Bryan, on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
Memorials may be made to the St. Patrick Catholic Church, Bryan.

Garwood G. Hardy
(1922 - 2008)

EDGERTON - Garwood G. Hardy, 85, of Edgerton, died Friday morning, May 9, 2008, at Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind., where he was a patient.
Born Nov. 12, 1922, at Bryan, to Joey (Busch) and John J. Hardy, he married Norma (Easler) Carlson on Oct. 16, 1976, at Anchorage, Alaska, and she survives.
After attending Bryan High School, he entered the United States Marines, serving in World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater with the Fourth Marine Division, including battles on Saipan and at Iwo Jima, receiving two Purple Hearts and a Gold Star.
After discharge from the service, he worked as an officer with the Bryan Police Department and in sales with Sears, and was a regional manager with Combined Insurance Company.
He was a graduate of Lexington Baptist College in Kentucky.
In 1968, he moved to Anchorage, Alaska, as a Combined Insurance regional manager. While in Alaska, he also was employed by the Anchorage Police Department in the Judicial Department. He was assistant pastor at Bethal Chapel in Anchorage, then became director of the Arms of Love Mission in Wassila and was pastor at Bayview Bible Baptist Church in Wassila.
Upon moving back to Ohio, he became pastor of the Amboy Baptist Church in Camden, Mich., and then of the Lifeline Bible Baptist Church in Pioneer. He was also director of the Yoke Fellowship Camp near Edgerton.
He made many mission trips, three to the Ukraine, three to Cuba and one to the Fiji Islands.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Cheryl (and husband, Clyde) Bass of Abilene, Texas, Pamela (Charles) McClellan of Montpelier, Mindy (Michael) Beeson of Anaheim, Calif., Christina (Raymond) Roelfs of Edgerton and Kim (Barbara) Carlson of Edgerton; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Carlton (Evelyn) Hardy of Bryan, Keith (Janet) Hardy of Defiance and John (Nancy) Hardy of Douglas, Mich.; and a sister, Myra Crawford of Lynchburg, Va.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 9-11 a.m. in the Krill Funeral Home, Edgerton.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with Dr. William Haag to officiate. Military rites will be conducted by John D. Smith Post No. 10 of the Edgerton American Legion. Interment will be in Evansport Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Independent Baptist Mission in Florida or to the Navajo Baptist Mission in New Mexico.

Shawn R. Handley
(1968 - 2008)

Shawn R. (Yager) Handley, 40, of Bryan, died Thursday, May 8, 2008, at her residence.
Born April 2, 1968, in Hudson, Mich., to Mary Lynn (Hinkley) and Larry D. Yager, she married Jeffery Handley, who survives.
She was currently a student at Northwest State Community College in Archbold.
Surviving in addition to her husband are her mother, Mary Lynn Yager of Bryan; sons, Kyler Moor and Ashton Hill, both of Bryan; daughter, Brooklynn Moor of Bryan; her brothers, Trevor Yager of Indianapolis, Ind., Chris Yager of Bryan, and Tracy Yager of Maui, Hawaii; and sister, Jacki Waldron of Bryan.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Visitation will be held on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Burr Funeral Home & Crematory of Bryan.
Funeral services for Shawn R. Handley will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Jon Exman officiating. Burial will follow in Leonardson Cemetery, in Pittsford, Michigan.

Richard James Farley
(1937 - 2008)

MONTPELIER - Richard James Farley, 70, died Tuesday, May 6, 2008, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Johnstown, Pa., on July 27, 1937, to Mary Hilda and James Farley, he spent his high school years in Akron and then graduated with a bachelor's degree in music education from Bowling Green State University.
In 1959, he moved to Morenci, Mich., to accept a teaching position with Sand Creek Community Schools and shortly thereafter earned a masterŐs degree in music education from Western Michigan University. In 1972, he became a founding member of the Adrian Chamber Brass Emsemble, playing trombone and baritone with the group for the decades to follow.
He also was a musician with the Adrian Symphony Orchestra for more than 10 years.
Mr. Farley was the band director at Sand Creek Community Schools for 30 years, retiring in 1989 after receiving the Michigan Band Director of the Year award. From 1977 to 1997, he was president of the Stair Public Library Board of Trustees in Morenci, stepping down after moving to Lake Seneca near Montpelier where he then served on the Lake Seneca Board of Trustees.
Working from his home, he established Farley Conducting Batons, hand-crafting batons from exotic woods. At this time, he also became an adjunct professor at Jackson Community College.
Surviving are his wife, Karyl (Karlee); two daughters, Christa (and husband, Patrick) McDowell of Morenci, Mich., and Lisa (Matthew) Sevcik of Sewickley, Pa.; four grandchildren, Benjamin Farquhar, Scott McDowell, Olivia Sevcik and Ruby Sevcik; a brother, Thomas (and wife, Patricia) Farley of Ravenna; two nieces; and five grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Services and interment in Morenci's Oak Grove Cemetery will be private.
A memorial service will be held June 14 at 11 a.m. at Sand Creek High School. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sand Creek Community Schools Band Boosters to be used for a scholarship fund.
