OTTAWA — A five-run bottom of the seventh for Ottawa-Glandorf proved costly for Bryan’s baseball team as the Golden Bears opened the season with an 8-7 eight-inning loss to the Titans on Monday at Memorial Field in Ottawa.
Bryan senior Breven Deckrosh drilled a two-run double to deep center field off O-G pitcher Carter Duling to score Taysen Deckrosh and Colton Smith. That gave the Golden Bears a 3-0 lead with two outs in the top of the second inning.
After Quinn Brown walked and Clayton Rupp was hit by a pitch, Keith Huard blasted a bases-clearing double to deep left field as Bryan took a 6-0 lead.
Breven Deckrosh and Brown got things started for Bryan in the first inning. Deckrosh doubled on the first pitch of the game down the left field line, then Brown smacked an RBI single to left center to give the Golden Bears an early 1-0 lead.
Brown opened the fourth inning with a single to centerfield. He stole second base on the next pitch, and after Rupp walked to set up first and second, Huard dropped an RBI single to left field to score Brown and extend Bryan’s lead to 7-1.
O-G (1-2) scored in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Ty Buckland hit a bloop single to left field, and after Trevor Schimmoeller walked, Alex Macke’s infield single loaded the bases.
Bryan pitcher Nolan Kidston walked Wes Davidson to put the Titans on the board, but the Golden Bears’ senior struck out Jacob Balbaugh on three pitches to get out of the inning.
Kidston’s night on the mound was over after five innings. He had 10 strikeouts, five hits, two runs and two walks.
But, O-G came back with a big five-run seventh inning to make it 7-7 and force an extra inning.
In the eighth inning, the Titans walked it off to hand the Golden Bears a season-opening loss.
Breven Deckrosh finished with two doubles and two RBIs, while Huard had a single, double and four RBIs. Brown finished with two singles and a RBI.
Ethan Psurny and Taysen Deckrosh also took the mound for Bryan. Psurny pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed five runs, two hits and two walks while striking out three. Taysen Deckrosh, who was credited with the loss, pitched one inning, allowing two hits, two walks, a run and striking out one.
Duling pitched the first two innings for O-G and allowed five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Jaxson Buddelmeyer pitched four innings and allowed zero runs or hits, giving him the win. Macke also finished with a double and single.
Bryan will look to bounce back against Napoleon (1-1) at 5 p.m. today at Sumpter Field.
