Bryan has temporarily shut down its high school boys basketball program due to a positive COVID-19 test within the team, Golden Bears Athletic Director Chad Savage said Wednesday.
The program will be in quarantine through Wednesday, according to Savage. The Golden Bears will return to practice Nov. 27.
As a result, Bryan’s season opener against Ottawa-Glandorf on Nov. 27 at home has been postponed. The Golden Bears’ contest at Tinora on Nov. 28 had previously been postponed due to the Rams’ extended football season.
The Golden Bears will look to reschedule both games and are hoping to open their season on Dec. 4 against Wayne Trace at Bryan High School.
Savage said Bryan’s other high school sports programs, including girls basketball, swimming, wrestling and bowling, are still practicing. A couple girls basketball players have been contact-traced into quarantine, he said.
Bryan’s winter sports season opens Friday as the girls basketball team hosts Lake. The junior varsity contest is scheduled for 6 p.m., with varsity to follow.
Separately, the Montpelier Ironhorse Wrestling Invitational on Dec. 5 has been canceled. Montpelier, Bryan, Edgerton and Fairview were scheduled to compete in the tournament.
Montpelier’s girls basketball season opener against North Central on Friday has also been canceled. North Central shifted to remote learning this week due to rising COVID-19 cases within the district.
