DEFIANCE — Three Bryan girls track and field athletes won multiple events as the Golden Bears opened the season with a second-place finish in a meet with Archbold and Defiance on Tuesday at Defiance’s Fred Brown Stadium.

Bryan’s girls team finished with 60 points, while Defiance won with 73. Archbold was third with 39.

Bryan’s boys team had several first-place finishers and placed third with 42 points. Defiance (64) edged Archbold (62) for first.

Rachel Fireovid, Shallyn Miley and Aquilina Cordic each had a pair of victories to lead the Golden Bears’ girls team.

Fireovid finished first in the long jump (14-5.5 feet) and 100 hurdles (20.00 seconds), while Miley won the 400 in 1:04.10 and Cordic the 300 hurdles in 50.80. Miley, Cordic, Haylee Wheeler and Allie Zimmerman teamed up to win the 1,600 relay in 4:26.80.

Bryan’s Molly Hess won the 3,200 in 13:51.30 and teamed up with Lily Dixon, Ella Miller and Addie Oberlin to finish second in the 3,200 relay (11:36.70).

Wheeler added a second-place finish in the long jump (14-2), while Zimmerman was second in the 800 (2:39.30). Grace Mueller (second in the 100 in 14.80) and Alexis Nieves (second in the 3,200 in 14:01.60) also had top-two finishes.

Lexi Alspaugh finished second in the shot put (35-1) and third in the discus (99-9) for Bryan, while Lauren Lambert was second in the high jump (4-6).

Bryan’s boys team had four individual first-place finishes and a relay team win. Thomas Snyder was first in the discus (121-7) and second in the shot put (40-0.25), while Andrew Cogswell won the long jump (18-4.25).

Bryan’s 400 relay team of Korbin Shepherd, Rylan Garza, Owen Potvin and Drew Hahn crossed the line first in 46.40. Joshuah Taylor won the 1,600 in 4:43.10, and Decota Shaw finished first in the 400 in 52.40 and second in the high jump with a 5-4.

Garza was second in the 100 in 11.80. Taylor, Xander Fackler, Trevor Mason and Blake Grube teamed up for a second-place showing in the 3,200 relay (9:25.30).

The Golden Bears will return to action at 10 a.m. Saturday for the Findlay Liberty-Benton Invitational at L-B High School.
