EDON — After Edon took a 23-14 halftime lead, Fayette responded with 17 points to take a 31-30 lead into the final frame.

But the Bombers responded, scoring 13 points in the final quarter — and held the Eagles to three points until there was 32.1 seconds left in the game — to finish the regular season with a 43-40 Buckeye Border Conference victory Friday at Edon High School.

“We knew (Fayette) was going to come out and give us everything they had — there’s nothing to lose right now,” said Edon interim coach and athletic director L.J. Walker. “I told the boys, ‘Once again, we can’t have anybody match our energy, can’t have anybody match (our) intensity level.’

“... In that (third) quarter, (Fayette) came and they fought. And we knew they were going to come and hit us in the face. But we needed to take that blow and go forward.”

Jack Berry, a 6-foot-3 junior, dropped a game-high 20 points for Edon (9-8, 9-3 BBC), which finished second in the conference behind Pettisville (14-6, 10-2). Drew Gallehue — another 6-3 junior — tallied a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds.

The Bombers shot 37.8 percent (17 of 45) from the floor, including 36.4 percent (4 of 11) from beyond the arc. They also outrebounded the Eagles 38-28, but only made 31.3 percent (5 of 16) of their free throws.

Eli Eberly scored a team-high 17 points — with 15 coming from 3-point range — and added five boards and two third-quarter steals for Fayette (8-11, 4-7).

Elijah Lerma had 11 points — eight of them in the second half — and grabbed four boards. Kaden Frenn had a team-high eight rebounds.

Fayette went 34.9 percent (15 of 43) from the floor, including 34.6 percent (9 of 26) from 3-point land, and made only 1-of-6 free throws.

“It was kind of a tale of two halves, really,” Fayette coach Todd Mitchell said. “The first half we were stagnant kind of offensively and we’re down nine at halftime. (We) came out in the second half attacking, made some shots and actually got the lead.

“And then we had some costly turnovers and a couple times the 50-50 balls didn’t go our way. Give (Edon) credit. They did enough things to get the ‘W.’”
