EDON — The Edon girls basketball team’s offense couldn’t get going on Monday night.

The Bombers only shot 19 percent (9 of 48) from the floor as Antwerp used its defensive pressure and Astianna Coppes’ scoring ability to earn a 35-20 nonconference victory over the Bombers at Edon High School.

“We couldn’t buy a bucket tonight,” Edon coach Caela Walker said. “Our girls were getting decent shot looks and opportunities. We just didn’t convert.”

Antwerp (1-0) started the game hot — specifically, Hayleigh Jewell. Within the first 3:19 of the game, Jewell scored six of the Archers’ eight points — with two coming off her own steals — to give Antwerp a 8-2 edge heading into an Edon (0-2) timeout with 4:40 left in the first.

While Ashley Kaylor came out of the timeout with a layup, two Coppes free throws, a Grace Schuette free throw and Coppes layup in a 38-second span had the Archers up 13-4 with 3:25 left. Carlie Kiess and Allison Kaylor had layups later in the frame to slim the lead to 13-8 heading into second quarter.

In the second quarter, Antwerp kept the pressure on. The Archers outscored Edon 9-4 and took a 22-12 advantage into halftime while only shooting 25 percent (7 of 28) from the floor in the first 16 minutes of the contest. They also forced 14 first-half turnovers.

“Coming into the game, I thought maybe we’d be able to turn them over a little bit with some pressure, and I thought that kind of got us going a little bit,” Antwerp coach Scott McMichael said.

The third quarter was the only frame Edon kept up with Antwerp. Each team scored six points to make it 28-18 Archers going into the final eight minutes. Coppes had two layups and Aewyn McMichael, one, for Antwerp, while Allison Kaylor scored twice via layups. The Bombers’ Olivia Mitchell also nailed a long 2-pointer to round out the quarter’s scoring.

And in the fourth, Edon only mustered up two points (Breanna Heinze layup with 2:03 left) while Coppes scored two more layups, Schuette dropped in a layup and Lydia Brewer hit 1-of-2 free throws to help seal the victory for Antwerp.

Coppes finished with a game-high 17 points, four rebounds and three steals. Jewell added four rebounds and three steals with her six first-quarter points, while Schuette totaled five points and four rebounds.

The Archers shot 27 percent (13 of 48) on the night and outrebounded the Bombers 40-39.

“Our goal was also to be able to get inside. I thought we had a little bit of a mismatch, a little bit of size advantage to our favor,” Scott McMichael said. “We did a good job of looking for (Coppes). She got it in spots where she could score from and did a good job of going to work when it was 1-on-1 in the post.”

Allison Kaylor dropped a team-high eight points and snagged seven boards. Ashley Kaylor finished with four points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Kiess had four points.
