EDON — Montpelier’s boys basketball team took a 12-9 lead over Edon after the first quarter and used a 6-2 run in the last 3:57 of the second frame to cut the Bombers’ halftime edge to 20-18.

But in the third quarter and up 22-20, Edon dominated the Locomotives and went on a 14-2 run in the last 3:37 of the frame to get a 36-22 advantage. The Bombers rode that momentum the rest of the game for a 55-32 Buckeye Border Conference victory on Friday at Edon High School.

“I thought that we played really hard in the first half, we just weren’t able to convert. We struggled scoring the ball,” Edon coach Matt Ripke said. “It seemed like every time we got ready to pull away, then (Montpelier) would pull back right in and make a play. And again, that’s a credit to their kids, they kept playing hard.

“But there in the second half, we were able to convert some of those turnovers into points and get to the free-throw line as well.”

Drew Gallehue tallied a double-double with game highs in points (16) and rebounds (16) for the Bombers (5-4, 2-0 BBC), who lost four of their last five games entering Friday’s matchup.

Jack Berry had 14 points, three offensive boards and two steals for Edon, while Caden Nester added nine points, three rebounds and three steals. Gannon Ripke chipped in seven steals, five rebounds and four points.

The Bombers went 37 percent (19 of 51), including 47 percent (18 of 38) from inside the arc and 8 percent (1 of 13) from beyond it, and made 64 percent (16 of 25) of their free throws. They also outrebounded the Locos 33-24, forced 27 turnovers and committed 11.

Jamison Grime scored a team-high 10 points with four boards for Montpelier (1-8, 0-2). Garrett Walz (two boards, two steals) added seven points and David Bowman had six points and six rebounds.

Despite the final score, the Locos shot 43 percent (12 of 28) from the floor, including 45 percent (10 of 22) from 2-point range and 33 percent (2 of 6) from 3-point land. They also converted 55 percent (6 of 11) of their free throws.
