EDON — Edon’s girls basketball team came roaring out of the gates, not letting Fairview take a lead for the entire first half.
But the Apaches ended the second quarter with a strong run to force a tie at halftime and carried that momentum the rest of the way for a 71-39 nonconference victory on Monday at Edon High School.
The Bombers (3-12) held a 23-17 lead over the Apaches (12-3) after Emma Hickman nailed mid-range shot with 5:07 to go in the first half, but Fairview grabbed momentum with an 8-2 run in the last 3:11 of the frame. The Apaches’ Alexis Taylor and Madisen Sharp each converted a layup, Allison Rhodes hit 1 of 2 from the free-throw line and Haley Hammer rattled in a 3-pointer to force a 25-25 tie.
A huge reason why Fairview kept up with Edon in the first half was because of Taylor, who scored all 12 of her points in the first 16 minutes and finished with eight rebounds on the night.
“That was nice to see. Lexi, she’s a nice player inside, has a nice touch and thought the first half really played a good half for us,” Fairview coach Russell Zeedyk said. “Got a lot of rebounds and lot of nice buckets for us.”
Coming out of the break, the Apaches’ offense got in gear and outscored Edon 21-6 in the third quarter to take a 46-31 advantage into the final eight minutes.
In the fourth quarter, Fairview continued its offensive prowess by going 9 of 16 from the floor and 7 of 9 from the free-throw line to secure the victory.
Kelly Crites had 11 of her team-high 13 points in the third quarter and swiped five steals with five rebounds in the second half, while Allison Rhodes totaled 11 points and eight boards. Carrie Zeedyk contributed nine points, eight rebounds and four steals in the final 16 minutes, Sydney Merritt had seven points and Bethany Singer chipped in six points and two steals.
The Apaches went 41 percent (26 of 64) from the floor, including 20 percent (2 of 10) from beyond the arc, and made 71 percent (17 of 24) of their free throws. They also outrebounded the Bombers 41-30, forced 25 turnovers (18 in second half) and committed 13 (nine in first half).
Natalie Wofford, meanwhile, dropped a game-high 20 points with eight rebounds (six in first quarter) for Edon. Hickman tallied seven points and two steals, while Jaycea Craven swiped two steals and scored all five of her points in the fourth quarter.
The Bombers shot 40 percent (17 of 43) overall, including 50 percent (11 of 22) in the first half, but only made 20 percent (2 of 10) of their free throws.
“We just talked about coming out and competing and executing, and I thought they did a great job of that,” Edon coach Caela Walker said. “(We were) hitting key buckets and getting some stops and just playing. Proud of how they executed and came out and got after it early, which helped us.”
