ARCHBOLD — A couple early 3-pointers from Archbold ballooned into a remarkable shooting performance from the Bluestreaks on Friday.

Archbold knocked down a mind-boggling 15-of-24 shots (63 percent) from 3-point range, made 24-of-40 shots (60 percent) overall and rolled to a 68-26 Northwest Ohio Athletic League boys basketball victory over Bryan at Archbold High School.

“We talked about that as being contagious, and we have really struggled shooting the basketball,” Archbold coach Joe Frank said after the Bluestreaks improved to 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the NWOAL. “There’s no ifs, ands or buts about it, and it obviously was one of those deals where it works both ways.

“It’s contagious when it doesn’t go in, which we’ve seen a lot lately, but it also can work the other way and I think when the first couple went in, everybody started thinking the rims look a little bit bigger and (we) played with confidence. We made a lot of extra passes to get really good shots instead of just a good shot.”

Five Archbold players knocked down multiple 3-pointers. The Bluestreaks were 7 of 11 from beyond the arc in the first quarter to take a 25-7 lead, 11 of 18 in the first half to build a 42-20 advantage and 14 of 22 through three quarters.

“Credit to them, they shot it really good tonight but at the same time, they were playing ‘horse,’ we didn’t play very good defense,” Bryan coach Brock Homier said.

Alex Roth, a 6-foot-1 junior, buried five 3s and had a game-high 18 points for Archbold. Cade Brenner canned three 3-pointers and had 15 points; Jayden Seiler had three 3s for nine points; and Brady Johns and Sonny Phillips hit two treys and had eight points apiece.

“Credit goes to the kids, they’ve stuck with it, we’ve had our struggles,” Frank said. “But tonight, things came together and we hope we can carry that on as we move forward and get some people back healthy and I think that’ll make a difference too.”

Bryan (0-9, 0-1 NWOAL), which has been dealing with illness and had to cancel two games last week, played its first contest since Jan. 3 and just its third game since Dec. 11.

“Adversity has been our middle name for a couple months here, it’s nice to get out,” Homier said. “But I’m not happy with our effort tonight.

“I don’t think we played very hard, any time it gets that out of hand, it’s tough to swallow. I think we’re better than what we played today, but Archbold can play. We’ve got to get better and our effort has to get better, and we’ve got to start making shots.

“At some point hopefully, all of these things will go together.”

Craig Jackson had two 3s and 10 points to lead the Golden Bears, who had eight players score. Sam Herold pulled down a team-high four rebounds.

Gavin Bailey had five rebounds for Archbold, which had a 22-17 advantage on the glass. The Bluestreaks converted numerous second-chance scoring opportunities as well.

Bryan will look to bounce back at 5:30 p.m. today when it hosts Van Wert.
