Napoleon graduate Zach Willeman was assigned to the AA Pensacola Blue Wahoos Tuesday after he signed a contract with the Miami Marlins earlier in the month.
Willeman was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 17th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft and was sent to the Kansas City Royals as the player to be named later in the Danny Duffy trade in October of 2021 after he missed the entire 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Last season, Willeman began the year in AA with Northwest Arkansas, but was promoted to AAA Omaha on May 31. He pitched in 34 games for the Storm Chasers, compiling 3-2 record with a 6.27 ERA. In 37.1 innings, Willeman had 38 strikeouts.
During Spring Training, Willeman was transferred to the development list March 30 and was then released by Omaha April 25.
“I needed a new opportunity,” said Willeman. “I was able to sign with the Miami Marlins. I had an extended Spring Training so it was only like 36 hours before I signed with a new team.
“I like it a lot,” Willeman said of the Marlins. “They have a great plan for me and a really good culture and organization. They see something in me and hopefully I will get an opportunity at the big league level.”
After pitching at the Marlins’ spring training complex since signing with them, Willeman was assigned to Pensacola and he expects to see time on the mound quickly.
“The coach said he doesn’t like relief pitchers to go more than three days without throwing, and I last pitched on Saturday,” said Willeman before going to the park Wednesday.
This is Willeman’s sixth season pitching professional baseball. He has appeared in 112 games, starting seven, and has a 13-13 record with six saves. Willeman has a 4.78 career ERA in the minors, with 210 strikeouts in 207 innings pitched.
Last season, while pitching for Omaha, Willeman was able to pitch in two games against the Toledo Mud Hens at Fifth Third Field. He pitched an inning of scoreless relief in both games. In the first outing, Willeman allowed one hit and a walk, while striking out one. In the second game, he set down the Hens in order, striking out two.
Pensacola does not play close to Ohio, but the Marlins’ AAA affiliate — the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp — play a series at Columbus in August.
