Girl Named Tom

A band from Pettisville recently appeared on the singing competition show “The Voice” on NBC. The band, seen in this screen capture from video, is comprised of siblings (from left) Joshua, Bekah and Caleb Liechty.

A northwest Ohio musical group recently auditioned on the TV singing competition “The Voice,” and impressed all four celebrity judges.

Girl Named Tom, a band comprised of siblings Josh, Bekah and Caleb Liechty of Pettisville taped their audition over the summer, but the episode ran on network TV Tuesday night.

During the band’s audition, all four judges — Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, Ariana Grande and John Legend — turned their chairs, indicating their desire to work with the group through the competition.

Girl Named Tom was the first musical act to get all four judges to turn during the new season.

On “The Voice,” musical acts first play for the judges, who have their backs turned to the artists during the performance. If a judge likes what they hear, they hit a button that turns their chair around.

If only one judge turns, the act works with them. If more than one turns, the performer or performers get to choose who they would like to work with.

Since Girl Named Tom had all four judges turn, they got to choose. Clarkson, however, was the first to turn her chair, and pointed that out to the group as they continued performing.

“Ah, shucks, this is really tough,” Bekah told the judges before the group made its decision.

“But, we’re going with Kelly,” she announced.

Clarkson then screamed her excitement from her chair and came toward the stage to embrace the members of the group.

“Thank you!” Clarkson yelled.

“I am so, so stoked about Girl Named Tom,” Clarkson said during an interview portion of the show.

She also expressed her amusement at the name.

“There is no girl named Tom, that’s just brilliant,” she said while laughing.

“The premiere was AMAZING and we are so honored to have been a part of it!!! Super excited to continue this journey on @NBCTheVoice with @kellyclarkson #teamgnt #teamkelly #thevoice @nbc,” the band tweeted on its Twitter account (@GirlNamedTom) after the show.

Under the show’s format, Girl Named Tom will next work with Clarkson, as will other artists the coach has picked, and enter the Battle Round. At that time, members of each coach’s team perform against each other, with the coach picking which act they will keep.

If Girl Named Tom survives the Battle Round, they will move on to the Knockout Round, which is similar to the Battle Round.

If they make it through that, they will then perform during the live performances. During those, viewers are given the chance to vote for their favorite until a winner is selected.

Those with the lowest vote are sent home each week, until one act remains and is chosen as “The Voice.”

The prize is a recording contract.
