EDON – Edon Village Council and Florence Township Trustees held a joint meeting on Monday to discuss issues regarding the Edon cemetery.
David Loughborough, chairman of the cemetery board and Edon Village council member, briefed council on what the main points of last week’s cemetery board were.
Policies for digging graves during wet conditions and a need to modernize were discussed at length.
“We have looked into potentially buying some mats to park the dirt on and we are looking at a policy that when we dig and it is wet, we are going to leave the dirt by the grave,” Loughborough said. “That is to help not tear stuff up.
“Also, the driveways need widened and that is something we could use help with.”
The lack of a comprehensive map of all of the grave plots and who is buried where has been the source of some issues as well. Edon employees have been tasked with helping out at the cemetery anytime an issue arises and modernized mapping would help streamline simple tasks.
“We also need it because we can’t have village employees running out there anytime someone needs something,” Loughborough said. “If you think about it, they have to go out there and locate it once for the monument folks, then they have to go out and locate if they need to set the headstone, then locate it again when they dig the hole. It is a lot of just running around and there have got to be some electronic ways of dealing with it.”
Edon Fiscal Officer Heidi Bidwell said that the village had attempted to use a computer program to map in the past, but said it was “not user friendly” and hard to decipher. There are some crude maps of the plots, but nothing that is fully comprehensive.
“We really need it to be put on the computer because when I am gone no one is going to know anything,” Bidwell said.
