Defiance Police Department has served an arrest warrant on Jeffery A. Smith, 35, last address unknown, on a charge of receiving stolen property in regards to the possession of the stolen CSX truck involved in a July train collision in Defiance.

Smith, who was previously held at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio, appeared in Defiance Municipal Court on Monday for his initial hearing and was released on a recognizance bond.

At 6 a.m. on July 26, the Defiance Police Department received a report of a CSX truck that was parked on or near the railroad crossing at Squires Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers located a CSX work truck unattended and stopped on the railroad tracks east of the crossing.

Within minutes of their arrival, a CSX train began approaching from the west and struck the work truck.

No injuries were sustained by any of the train crew.

It was later determined that the CSX truck was stolen from the CSX offices on Jackson Avenue. An investigation of the incident was conducted in conjunction with the CSX Railroad Police.
