Mobility Plus of NW Ohio is now one of a select group of businesses nationwide to earn the Senior Home Safety Specialist designation. The designation identifies its staff as having obtained the knowledge necessary to help educate older adults and family members about the serious issues of home safety, fall prevention, personal safety and financial exploitation.
According to AARP, 90% of adults state that they would like to age peacefully in their own homes, yet 85% of them have done nothing to modify their homes in order to do so.
Age Safe America is an organization that is directed by a group of nationally recognized associations which promote the safety and well-being of older adults. It specializes in training individuals how to properly assess the safety and endurance of homes, which is where a majority of falls happen for older adults.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one-third of adults age 65 years or older fall in their home each year, resulting in injury, long-term disability and premature loss of independence. The CDC also states that 25% of all hospital emergency room admissions and 40% of all nursing home admissions are fall-related, resulting in an estimated cost of over $67 billion each year.
Mobility Plus of NW Ohio, in Edgerton, specializes in helping people with mobility issues which have occurred due to aging, medical conditions or surgeries by offering specialized equipment and technologies to keep them independently mobile in and around their homes.
“The certification is just one of many steps that we are taking to make sure that people in our community can stay safe and age in-home opposed to a retirement or assisted living facility,” said Matt Reid, mobility specialist at Mobility Plus of NW Ohio. “The statistics are staggering on injuries that occur to older people in their own homes and these can be easily prevented with a little guidance. We feel that if people would be open to some simple recommendations on how to modify their homes to help them stay safe as they age, they will be able to live longer and age in-place, which is something that a majority of older adults say they would like to do.”
Reid said Mobility Plus of NW Ohio is the only business in northwest Ohio to have earned the certification to give Age Safe America’s 240-point home safety assessment. Anyone interested in receiving a home safety assessment should contact Mobility Plus of NW Ohio to schedule a consultation.
