Two West Unity residents lost their lives in in a one-vehicle crash Thursday.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Van Wert Post is investigating the fatal crash, which occurred at about 2:40 p.m. on U.S. 127, just north of Ohio 81 in Van Wert County.
A 2006 motorhome, operated by Roger D. Schilt, 75, of West Unity, was northbound on 127. According to a news release from authorities, the vehicle drifted left of center, continued off of the left side of the road, struck a ditch and came to rest after striking a concrete culvert.
Schilt was pronounced dead on scene. A passenger, Catherine L. Schilt, age 74, also of West Unity, was transported by Van Wert Fire/EMS to Van Wert Health.
Mrs. Schilt was transported via Samaritan to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
The crash resulted in a temporary closure of U.S. 127 just north of Ohio 81 during the crash investigation and scene cleanup.
The Van Wert Post was assisted on scene by Ohio City Volunteer Fire Department and EMS personnel, Van Wert Fire and EMS, Ohio Department of Transportation – Van Wert Facility, Van Wert County Sheriff’s Office and Hague Towing.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the incident. The crash remains under investigation.
