A simple traffic stop turned into a high-speed pursuit Tuesday evening and local police are asking for witnesses to step forward.

At 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, a West Unity police officer attempted to stop a motorcycle for a stop sign violation on Madison Street at Church Street.

“The driver fled,” West Unity Police Chief J.R. Jones said. He sped north of the village in excess of 90 mph and nearly lost control before accessing the Ohio Turnpike from the service plaza on County Road M.

“We know it was a silver motorcycle,” Jones said.

One officer reported it may have been a Suzuki, but that has yet to be confirmed.

“We didn’t get him but we’d appreciate hearing from anyone who may have witnessed it,” Jones said.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the West Unity Police Department at 419-924-2271 or the Williams County Sheriff’s Office at 419-636-3151.
