Derek Blue

Derek Blue was the guest speaker at St. Mary School’s Veterans Day program.

The students and staff at St. Mary School in Edgerton took time to honor all veterans at the Veterans Day program earlier this month. The guest speaker was Derek Blue, who graduated from St. Mary School in 2011 and from Edgerton High School in 2017. After high school he enlisted in the Air Force with the Ohio Air National Guard, served about four years and is currently a senior airman and works in aerospace propulsion at the National Guard base in Toledo, working on jet engines. Blue has been deployed one time, to England.

Through his presentation, students were able to see that veterans are people just like them as he shared photos of his First Communion, Tiger basketball and Edgerton football. They learned that he works on F-16s, which can fly at speeds exceeding 1,000 mph, faster than the speed of sound. He also spoke about the many sacrifices that veterans endure to ensure Americans’ freedoms and closed his presentation with a prayer for all veterans.

A quartet from the Old Crown Brass Band also played patriotic music throughout the event.

“The staff and students couldn’t be more proud of him and all of our veterans,” said Julie Taylor, principal at St. Mary School.
