At the end of June, I sent a letter to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation Bill Northey about the continued rain in Ohio. I asked for clarification on the assistance process to help ease the uncertainty farmers are facing. I also extended an invitation to the Under Secretary and USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue to visit the 5th Congressional District to survey the situation and hear from farmers in person.
The rainfall in Ohio has been relentless, and our farmers are paying the price. This has been a tough planting season, but we’re going to get through this together. I’m pleased with the responsiveness of the USDA and our governor, and trust they will do everything within their power to help our farmers and assuage their concerns. Thank you to everyone who has shared their stories.
• We recently unveiled a bipartisan package to combat robocalls, and my STOP Robocalls Act was a major component of that. My language in the package builds on the FCC’s recent announcement that it would allow carriers to provide robocall blocking technologies to customers on an informed opt-out basis. Currently, you have to opt-in. My language also would increase communication between the FCC and phone companies, and study the benefits of having better tracking systems.
• In case you missed it, the June jobs report recently came out, and it was great news for our country. June exceeded expectations, with 224,000 new jobs added. Wages are rising, and unemployment is still near a 50-year low. Thanks to pro-growth GOP policies like tax reform, our economy is booming!
