This week — Oct. 6-12 — is National Newspaper Week. It’s the 79th annual celebration that recognizes the service of newspapers and their employees across North America, and is sponsored by Newspaper Association Managers.

This year’s theme is “Think F1rst — Know Your 5 Freedoms.” To mark National Newspaper Week 2019, The Bryan Times editorial page this week will feature a number of guest columns and cartoons that speak to the importance of newspapers and their role in protecting and furthering the First Amendment.

”Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
