The bats got going early and often for the Bryan ACME baseball team on Monday and they didn’t let up as the Bears cruised to a sweep of the Defiance Bulldogs in a doubleheader at Sumpter Field in Bryan.
Bryan won the first game 11-0 in five innings and followed that up with 7-3 win in the second game to improve to 16-1 on the summer season.
After a scoreless first inning in the first game, the Bears took a 1-0 lead after the bottom of the second when a sacrifice fly from Benny Roebuck drove Breven Deckrosh home. The Bears then proceeded to score four runs in the third and six more in the fourth to cruise to the 11-0 run-rule victory.
Nate Miller was a home run short of the cycle to lead the Bears at the plate. He went 3-for-3 with a double, triple, an RBI and two runs scored. Logan Clemens was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, Deckrosh was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a triple, Brooks Brown was 3-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI, and Roebuck was 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBIs.
Dom James earned the win by tossing a shutout on the mound. He went all five innings, gave up one hit, had zero walks and struck out seven Defiance batters.
“Dom came out and set the tone,” Bryan coach Doug Williamson said. “He did a great job pitching-wise. Dom always comes out and pitches hard, but today he just set the tone at the very beginning.”
During the second game, the Bears continued to roll. A Clemens single knocked home Connor Arthur and Miller during the bottom of the first to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. And even after the Bulldogs countered with a run during the top of the third to make it a 2-1 game, Bryan responded to score three runs during the third and two more during the fourth to pull away to victory.
Arthur was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Clemens was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
“Our bats woke up today, which helped quite a bit,” Williamson said. “Plus we did a great job today running the bases. For as hot as it is, I thought that was one of our best hustle games.”
Roebuck got the start on the mound and earned the win. He pitched four innings, gave up one hit, one run and struck out five.
The Bears will conclude their regular season ACME schedule with a 5 p.m. game against Wauseon today at Sumpter Field in Bryan.
After that, the Bears begin play in the 2019 Williams County ACME Baseball Sectional Tournament. Bryan drew a first-round bye and will play the winner of a Stryker vs. Edgerton matchup at 1:15 p.m. on Saturday at Sumpter Field in Bryan.
“We’re setting the tone and this is the way we want to go into the tournament,” Williamson said. “We’re pitching well, we’re hitting well and we’re running the bases well.”
