The Bryan girls tennis team opened up the 2019 season with a 5-0 sweep on the road against Fostoria on Saturday.
Jennessa Johnson beat Mya Weimerskrich at first singles 6-0, 6-1, Gabi Bany beat Abrianna Swartz at second singles 6-1, 6-4 and Mackenzie Adams beat Raelyn Hoffman 6-2, 6-3 at third singles.
At first doubles, Emilee Bassett and Kaitlyn Posey defeated Maddie Cook and Imani Velazquez 6-0, 6-1, while the second doubles duo of Haylee Wheeler and Brooke Taylor beat Jenny Chasco and Shay Olin 6-0, 6-0.
“This is the first time in my coaching career that five of my starting seven players were sophomores,” Bryan coach Mitchell Owens said. “It’s a unique position for us. Because we are so young, we have to overcome two obstacles every time we step out on the court because we need to defeat our opponent and our inexperience. Today, we overcame both.
“I thought our doubles played some solid tennis today, and Jennessa Johnson played the aggressive-style of tennis we need her to play at first singles. It was a good confidence builder for everyone.”
Bryan’s junior varsity winners included Kyla Fox, Abby Snider, Sydney Davis, Katie Seaman, Taylor Peel and Allie Parker.
