The successful 2019 season for Bryan tennis star Jay Fortner continued Saturday as the freshman phenom placed second at a Division II district tennis tournament in Bowling Green.
Fortner began the day by defeating Luke Henrich of Mansfield St. Peter’s in the district semifinals 6-1, 6-3, before losing to Ottawa Hills’ Matthew McGee 6-3, 6-0 in the district finals.
As a top four placer at districts, Fortner qualified for the OHSAA Division II Boys Tennis State Tournament at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason this Friday and Saturday.
Fortner is the first Bryan singles player to advance to the state tournament since 1989. He also set the single-season Bryan record for wins in a season this year with 23.
