Wauseon 178, Bryan 178
The Bryan boys golf team lost a close one to Wauseon at Ironwood Golf Club in Wauseon on Thursday.
The Bears and Indians finished the nine-hole dual match tied at 178, but since Wauseon’s fifth golfer beat Bryan’s fifth, the Indians won.
“Tough one for us to take tonight,” said Bryan coach Tyler Bernath, whose team was without Clayton Rupp and Drew Peters on Thursday. “Give credit to Wauseon for picking up the win, and doing what they needed to get the win. Not being at full strength hurt us, but we just needed one stroke for it to be a different outcome. We knew going in that everyone would have to play their best for us to pull it off given what we had.”
Bryan was led by medalist Connor Shirkey, who fired a 35. He was followed by teammates Case Hartman (41), Nolan Kidston (47), Colin Shirkey (55) and Max Eckhardt (73).
Wauseon was led by a 42 from Trent Armstrong. He was followed by teammates Dylan Grahn (43), Eric Parker (46), Caleb Leu (47), Andy Scherer (47), Luke Wheeler (51).
Bryan continues play Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with the Golden Bear Invitational at Riverside Greens Golf Course in Stryker.
“Our guys will regroup and hopefully have a solid round in the Golden Bear on Saturday,” Bernath said. “We’ll continue to prepare for Monday (against Swanton and Delta) ahead of the league tournament on Friday.”
