The North Central golf team opened up the 2019 season with a victory at the Defiance Invitational at Eagle Rock Golf Club in Defiance on Monday.
The Eagles won with point total of 333, which just beat out second-place Pettisville, which finished with 334.
North Central was led by Chace Boothman, who shot a 74. He was followed by teammates Zack Hayes (83), Collin Patten (85), Jack Bailey (91) and Mason Sanford (97).
Defiance was third with 336, Ottawa-Glandorf was fourth with 341 and Kalida rounded out the top five with 346.
Bryan was ninth with a score of 365 and was led by Case Hartman, who shot 75. Nolan Kidston shot an 89, Drew Dauber shot 96, while Nathan Hess and Colin Shirkey each fired rounds of 105.
“We had some nerves in some of our inexperienced players get the best of them on the first nine,” Bryan coach Tyler Bernath said in an email. “Our top four players’ total was 20 shots better on the second nine than the first nine. Other than Case and Nolan, the other players today haven’t seen a ton of tournament experience.
“I’m proud of how everyone bounced back on the second nine. It would have been easy for them to give up, and not play well on the second nine. They didn’t give up and dug in and straightened things out. It showed how much they care and how much trust the players can have in each other knowing they’ll all go out and do their best.”
Fairview was 14th with a score of 379 and was led by John Nusbaum, who shot an 88. He was followed by teammates Nathaniel Adkins (89), Ronnie Adkins (90), Brendan Degryse (112) and Triston Joost (114).
Stryker didn’t have enough golfers to score as a team, but Spencer Clingaman shot an 82, Max Wonders shot 115 and Devon Weirauch shot 127.
Tinora’s Dylan Von Deylen fired a round of 68 to earn medalist honors. Pettisville’s Tommy McWatters (73) was second with a 73, Defiance’s Will Lammers and North Central’s Boothman tied for third with 74, while Bryan’s Hartman rounded out the top five with a 75.
